For crisis settings and disaster relief, coping tools for trauma in English/Spanish and English/Ukrainian

“The human response to psychological trauma is one of the most important public health problems in the world. Traumatic events… confront people with such horror and threat that it may temporarily or permanently alter their capacity to cope, their biological threat perception, and their concepts of themselves.” Bessel van der Kolk, Trauma Psychiatrist and Researcher

COPEKIT coping tools are designed for deployment by all responders: First and Second Responders and all other care providers. The tools support survivors by promoting active coping during and immediately after a crisis or trauma event as well as in the recovery phase. The sooner a survivor is equipped with healthy coping skills, the better they will understand and manage their trauma symptoms and know when to ask for help. This reduces suffering and the risk for maladaptive coping. The tools promote communication between responders/ caregivers and survivors which facilitates operational and treatment compliance. The tools allow for task-shifting to non-specialists, which enables scaling of the response, especially relevant for mass trauma events. The skills incorporate the five principals of psychological first aid: promote sense of safety, calming, sense of self and collective efficacy, connectedness and hope. (Hobfall et al, 2007).
